The Family Support 360 Project is now entering the next stage of  its grant, and is looking to work with another Region!  This is an opportunity to work with communities to develop better and more responsive family supports.

Text Box: The Idaho State Independent Living Council (SILC) will develop legislation to present to the 2007 State legislature to require that the independent living philosophy be required to be taught in all Idaho elementary and secondary schools.  The SILC determined that developing legislation would be the only way to ensure that all students receive the same educational opportunities.  Over the past few years the SILC has worked in collaboration with the Idaho State Department of Education, the Blackfoot School District and the Living Independently For Everyone

Text Box: (LIFE) center for independent living to implement a curriculum to prepare students to successfully transition from school to adult life.  Unfortunately, this process has been set aside in favor of a less effective voluntary system through internet training.
 
The Blackfoot School District developed a transition curriculum but has only partially implemented it.  The SILC believes that the only way to fully implement the curriculum is to make it a requirement.

Text Box: needs to be done to allow people with disabilities to live independently.  By teaching independent living to students in Idaho schools the state has a much better chance to make lives more meaningful to all of Idaho’s citizens.  When students are taught about independent living at a young age they can utilize current independent living options and technology and be a part of future advances through their own experiences, needs, input and entrepreneurships.
